Snowfall and Maritime Precautions

Kar Yağışı ve Denizcilik Önlemleri

The snowfall that affected our country in recent weeks had a negative impact on our daily lives. These negative effects caused difficult moments not only on land but also at sea. We thought about what kind of content we could create for you, captains and captain candidates, and compiled a list of precautions to take during snowfall.

Snowfall typically does not last for extended periods in our region. However, if precautions are not taken, even a short period of snowfall can result in long-term damage.

  • Heavy snow cover can create immovable loads for bimini tops and spray hoods. Preferably, close them in advance or clean them frequently.
  • Icicles hanging from masts and gaffs can fall due to swaying and cause head injuries.
  • Salt water is the easiest material to find that melts snow and ice. Wash the deck with seawater.
  • Slipping and falling on a snowy or icy deck is one of the most common winter injuries. No footwear can prevent this.
  • If sailing in snowfall, waterproof clothing alone is insufficient; clothing that prevents heat loss and sweating should be preferred. Especially during sailing, falling into the water is much more risky than under normal conditions.
  • Visibility decreases in heavy rain. In addition to limited visibility precautions, those on deck duty can withstand harsh conditions for shorter periods of time. The sailing plan should be made accordingly.
  • Keeping in mind that the most heat loss occurs through the scalp and head, especially when wet, we should carry a hat with us.
  • While Webasto and similar heating systems are effective, insulation, keeping the boat interior and clothing dry, and selecting a sleeping bag appropriate for the conditions are the most important factors in enhancing comfort and durability. It should not be forgotten that snow itself is an excellent insulating material.
  • In stationary environments, oil-filled radiators are among the most reliable and efficient heating models. However, we do not recommend continuous 220V electricity consumption when the boat is not in use.
  • A full fuel tank is beneficial for both the heating systems and the engine’s operation.
