Preventing Conflict at Sea

Denizde Çatışmayı Önleme

Two boats sailing on the sea have different rights of way depending on their characteristics. These rules, established in accordance with international norms, apply to all seas, territorial waters, and international waters around the world.

Accordingly, a boat propelled by power;

  • sailing,
  • fishing,
  • with limited maneuverability due to
  • water cutting,
  • gives way to vessels not under command.

Similarly, a boat sailing with its sails open but powered by an engine is also considered a power-driven boat. Article 2 of the Collision Prevention Regulations requires every boat to take the necessary maneuvers to prevent a collision, regardless of how justified it may be, in accordance with the above rules and warnings. An experienced sailor is one who knows who to give way to. Sometimes this can be anyone.

In situations where two vessels propelled by power enter the collision course, the following rules apply:

    • The vessel on the port side gives way to the other.
    • The overtaking vessel leaves the course of the vessel it is overtaking.
    • To avoid causing problems for commercial vessels navigating in the Traffic Separation Scheme, sailing or fishing is prohibited in the aforementioned areas.

On boats that carry a masthead light at the top of the mast, it is incorrect practice to light a silyon light in the middle of the mast.

One of the most common mistakes is to light both the silyon and the iron lantern at the same time on a boat traveling at less than 50 meters. When viewed from the bow, the two white lanterns are lit one above the other but in the same line, which can cause misunderstandings.
