Famous Boats: Kısmet

We will talk about Sadun Boro, the first Turkish sailor to circumnavigate the globe between 1965 and 1968, and his wife Oda Boro’s famous sailboat Kısmet.
Some boats hold a special place in Turkish maritime history. Kısmet is perhaps the most well-known of them… Measuring 10 meters in length, with a keel, the boat was built in 1963 at Athar Beşpınar’s workshop in Salacak. Due to the boat’s design, they primarily sailed under spinnaker, which is why he named his book about the world voyage “Pupa Yelken” (Spinnaker Sail). Having traveled approximately 150,000 miles, Kısmet served as Sadun Boro’s home at sea for 46 years.
Currently on display at the Rahmi Koç Museum, seeing Kısmet back at sea as soon as possible and honoring this vessel of such significance to Turkish maritime history is a wish shared by all maritime enthusiasts.
