The World's Deepest Shipwreck: USS Samuel B

In 1944, during the Battle of Samar, the wreck of the USS Samuel B, which sank off the coast of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean and was never seen again, was found. The wreck of the ship, which was sunk by the Japanese, was discovered at a depth of 6,900 meters by diving enthusiast and businessman Victor Vescovo. Vescovo, who recorded the ship split in two on video, also holds the distinction of having discovered the USS Johnston, the previous deepest wreck. Additionally, he is the first person to dive to the deepest point in all five oceans. The wreck of the ship, where 89 of the 224 crew members lost their lives, continues to rest at the bottom of the ocean as the deepest wreck until a deeper one is discovered.
