Preparations to be made on board before setting sail

Yelkenli Seyrine Çıkmadan Önce Teknede Yapılacak Hazırlıklar

Sailing a yacht is not like getting into a car. Even for a short trip, both the boat and the crew must be prepared before setting sail.
Even on a short trip of a few hours in good weather, dangerous incidents can occur that may have serious consequences. This is not to say that we should be afraid and choose to remain marina sailors, but being aware does not cause loss; on the contrary, it brings gain. It is important to remember that “the sea loves those who fear it.”

*Even if it is a short sailing trip, it is important to inform those coming aboard, even if they are experienced. Getting their input, especially from newcomers, helps them embrace the boat trip. When to leave, when to return, and what kind of trip it will be should be explained in advance. This plan should also be communicated to someone staying ashore.

*No two boats are alike, and each has its own unique usage and operational differences. This is particularly important if you are renting a boat. The main engine usage, how to start and stop it, the instrument panel and electrical system, anchor winch usage, toilet usage, bilge pump and hydrofoil (if available) and how they work, fresh water and wastewater valves, their locations, and kitchen stove and refrigerator usage should be demonstrated.

*Safety on a boat is also essential for sailing. Situations we never want to encounter can only be safely navigated if we plan and prepare for them in advance. Hoping they won’t happen is wishful thinking. The emergency measures that must be in place on every boat are determined by relevant regulations and laws. Signal flares, the location of the flashlight and air or blow horn, how the horseshoe lifebuoy and its lamp are attached and how to throw them, the location of fire extinguishers and how to use them are some of the key things to remember. We can also add how the radio works to this list.

*It is very important to obtain a weather report from a reliable source. Experienced sailors eventually develop this practice into a daily routine.

*On sailing trips lasting more than a few hours, having food and drink on board is not a luxury but a necessity. In cases of rough and harsh sea conditions, these can be prepared in advance and kept on hand. From this perspective, cold sandwiches, biscuits, or canned goods are indispensable items in the boat’s kitchen. Beverages that are preheated and placed in a thermos eliminate the difficulty of lighting a stove in the kitchen on rough seas, and their benefit is undeniable.
Planning for a long crossing, on the other hand, will require a very detailed list and shopping.

*An experienced boat owner can tell what is missing or wrong with a simple check as soon as they board the boat. Every boat has its own language. A sailor who knows their boat well will eventually be able to interpret the sounds the boat makes even from where they are lying. However, as we mentioned earlier, this is more difficult for those who rent boats. For this reason, details about the boat should be obtained from the authorized personnel of the boat rental company.
The engine block, belt tension, oil dipstick, coolant level, and water circulation are checked.
The voltage levels of both groups (engine and service), whether they are charging, and the switches are checked. The winch is operated.
The water in the bilge, the presence of any unusual odors inside the boat, and whether the hatches are open should be checked.
During the deck inspection, the safety equipment, the condition of the lifelines and fenders, and the condition of the sails and moving equipment should be quickly checked. The rigging, mast, and boom should be quickly inspected.

May the seas be kind to you…
