What precautions should be taken during a storm?

Fırtına Seyrinde Alınacak Önlemler

In stormy weather, i.e., winds of 8 Beaufort or higher, it is essential to avoid sailing, especially in rough sea conditions. These limits and conditions for amateur sailing may sometimes require facing the inevitable. As with all other aspects of boating and sailing, “good preparation” is the key to success. Here are the precautions to take when sailing in a storm:

1) The fuel tank should be kept full. The most undesirable situation is for debris from the fuel tank to enter the system or for air to enter due to waves and rocking.

2) A spare transfer hose should be kept on hand. It is crucial that the hose is suitable for diesel fuel and that it has clamps and hose connectors.

3) The deck should be cleared. Unused ropes should be secured, and mooring lines should be fastened.

4) The bimini should be closed. Flags should be lowered, and the flag should preferably be the smallest size.

5) The spray hood should be opened or closed as appropriate. This may depend on the design of the boat, the age or condition of the materials, and the type of voyage being undertaken.

6) Hatches and portholes should be closed, and each should be checked individually at certain stages of the voyage.

7) Unused valves should be closed. (Except for the engine valve in particular)

8) The bilge should be kept dry. This is not only for control purposes, but also to prevent odors inside the boat.

9) Life jackets should be checked in advance, and any missing items (batteries, tubes, belts, etc.) should be completed in advance.

10) Belt straps, horseshoe life buoys, lights, and lanterns should be prepared/any missing items should be replaced.

11) A lifeline should be installed on the deck.

12) Rigging and shrouds should be visually and manually inspected.

13) The interior of the boat should be cleaned.

14) Doors, drawers, and cabinets should be secured and locked.

15) Water should be heated and placed in a thermos. This facilitates the preparation of hot items such as soup, tea, and coffee.

16) Easy-to-consume foods such as sandwiches should be prepared in advance.

17) Medication for seasickness and nausea should be prepared and taken orally half an hour before departure.

18) Sails should be prepared according to the weather conditions. (If necessary, storm flocks and sails should be rigged before departure.)

19) Clothing made from high-quality materials suitable for the conditions is the most important factor in ensuring personal comfort in stormy conditions. It is important to know not only when to put on appropriate clothing before getting wet, but also when and where to take it off.

20) Particular attention should be paid to driftwood, bags, and sacks in the harbor, especially when maneuvering.

21) The main sail should be hoisted with engine assistance within the breakwater. The Genoa sail can be hoisted once outside the harbor.

22) A knowledgeable person on shore should be informed of the plan and kept in contact.
